弗拉基米尔·亚历山大洛维奇·沙罗夫，1952年生于莫斯科，父亲是著名的童话作家。1977年毕业于沃罗涅什大学历史系，1984年获得历史学副博士学位，在考古队当过卡车司机和工人，担任过文学秘书。1980年开始发表文学作品，迄今为止已有六、七部长篇小说问世。多次获得文学奖。

《苏格拉底前后》是作者在四篇讲稿的基础上修改完成的，是有关古希腊哲学的一部重要著作，内容涉及苏格拉底时代前后古希腊的哲学和科学等内容。在书中，作者以苏格拉底为分界点，将古希腊哲学史分为四个阶段：苏格拉底之前的爱奥尼亚科学、苏格拉底时期、柏拉图时期和亚里士多德时期。当然，作者并非只探讨这几个人，和他们同时代的其他重要学者及学派也有所涉及，对亚里士多德以后的斯多噶派和伊壁鸠鲁学派也有论述。 康福德在本书中对古希腊哲学史的分析可谓鞭辟入里、切中肯綮，他的语言也非常生动流畅，使人读来决不像一般的哲学书那样枯燥乏味，应当说这是一本不可不读的哲学史名著，同时也是了解和研究古希腊史的重要参考书。
